Abstract: The talk will survey some techniques to construct a continuous flow associated with an evolution equation in  an abstract space. In the first part I shall discuss the approach based on nonlinear semigroup theory, and its applications to scalar conservation laws. The second part will be concerned with the existence of alternative metrics that render the flow Lipschitz continuous w.r.t. the initial data.    These apply, in particular, to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws and to some first order nonlinear wave equations.
